Week 4 – How to excel at communicating
An excellent communicator has many facets, they have certain beliefs that they hold close and these underpin the way in which they communicate with others and their approach to communication. Excellent communicators have an ability to develop rapport by adapting their body language and tone of voice and they are able to manage their ‘personal state’ to become calm and controlled before any key communications. They ensure that their focus is on the outcome which they desire (albeit with a flexible approach to how they get there).
However, to really excel at communication, there is another valuable skill to acquire… controlling the level of detail within a conversation, negotiation or meeting. Through the use of simple language patterns, it then becomes easy to help people get to their point, convey their message, find purpose and gain agreement for a collective way forward, even during times of disagreement.
Furthermore, an excellent communicator listens carefully to the language which people use to ensure that they understand and reflect the recipient’s preferred communication style. This enables them to amend their own language and method of communication to ensure the message gets through.
Have you ever met someone who seemed to have a different language all of their own? Would it be useful to spot key phrases that people use and then be able to amend your own language style to ensure your message gets through and delivers back the response you want!
